noun four·be·rie | \ ¦fu̇rbə¦rē\ plural -s Definition of fourberie : TRICKERY, DECEPTION Merriam-Webster
One of the biggest fraud challenges facing the business world today is account take over. In the pre-days of cyberland, the fraudster would dumpster dive or steal the mail from your mailbox and get your information from an old statement from your trash and use social engineering to con the underpaid and overworked customer service representative to change your address and order a new credit card on your account. Today we’re not just talking about changing the address of a credit card account and ordering a replacement card to commit fraud. We’re talking about changing your routing and account number from your direct deposit payroll account and diverting the funds to a fraudulent account. We’re talking about getting an email or text from your CFO or Director asking for funds to be wired or an invoiced paid. In some cases, we’ve even seen the secretary buying green dot cards for an all company directors meeting being held off-site for the day.
It’s important to train your staff to know the signs of deceit or fraud or better known as fourberie! In today’s virtual reality world, I don’t need to go to your home and look through your trash or mailbox, I can simply log in from my laptop in Beijing, Russia or anywhere around the world in my PJ’s and rummage around your computer to find the information I need to create your identity in Cyberworld. Heck, I don’t even need to know what I’m doing, I can buy your information from the Dark Web which is the equivalent of the Walmart in cyberland. One stop shopping!
